WHAT IS A COLPOSCOPY?
A colposcopy is a way to achieve an increased view of the cervix. It is a quick and easy way to detect cell changes in the cervix that can turn into cancer.
The test lasts 5 to 10 minutes and is very similar to having a Pap test. The difference is that your doctor uses a special magnification instrument called a colposcope.
IT HURT?
Colposcopy is virtually painless. You may feel some pressure when the speculum is introduced. You may also feel some itching or burning when you wash your cervix with a solution like the vinegar.
If you have a biopsy, you may feel some discomfort. Most people describe it as an acute prick or something similar to menstrual pain. You may have some dark spot or vaginal discharge for a few days after the biopsy.
WHAT SHOULD I KNOW BEFORE MY MEDICAL APPOINTMENT?
You don“t have to do much to prepare for a colposcopy. Here are 2 steps you can take to facilitate the process:
1- Schedule colposcopy for when you don“t have the menstrual period. That way, it is easier to see the cervix.
2- Do not take douching, do not use tampons, do not put any medicine in your vagina or have vaginal sex at least 24 hours before your medical appointment.
When will I get the results of my Pap test and HPV?
Typically, the results of the Pap test and HPV take between 1 and 3 weeks. In most cases, the results are normal.
